I’m pleased to report back on a successful Labour Party Conference. It has been vibrant and energetic, both on the main stage and in the policy discussions on the fringe, and the overriding sense is that we have Hope again.

There were new announcements: on long-overdue leasehold reform, help for first-time buyers, changes to the water system and plans to bring energy bills down. Our new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, used his speech this week to pledge big, long-term action on the quality of our housing, our care system, our water supply and the energy network.

Importantly, he also laid out a pathway for investing in young people and giving them hope for their future. More apprenticeships, work placements and mental health support will create real options for young people in areas like ours. All of our children should know that we, as a country, will support them.

The Prime Minister is passionate about rewiring the state and making sure that every postcode can feel the benefits of a growing economy. The hard part comes next, but this week was about Hope from the Labour Party, in contrast to the fear and negativity of the other parties.

Conference has also been a valuable chance to meet Government Ministers and push for important investment in our area, including an express bus to Manchester city centre. I’ll keep making that case, and I’ll keep you updated on progress.
